Submission Requirements

Complete our online form, upload your work, and pay your entry fee on our secure site. Your PayPal receipt is your confirmation of submission.

Only original, unpublished manuscripts may be entered.

Submissions for the 2024 Novel contest are due September 30, 2024. Submissions for the 2024 Short Story and Poetry contests are due November 30, 2024. Entry files must include cover sheet with your contact information and you must complete payment for each submission. Your PayPal receipt is your confirmation of submission.

Each entry should be one file (PDF, DOC, or DOCX) and include cover sheet information:  title, author’s name, address, telephone number, email address, and category entered (short story, novel, or poetry). Entries must be typed, double spaced (short story and novel only). WordPerfect or other applications will not be accepted.

Please name your file with the title of the work, your name, or other unique file name. Entries titled "Draft," "Hackney Submission," or the like may not be identified as your work.

Multiple entries must be submitted separately by deadline dates. Manuscripts will not be returned.

Online entries must be accompanied by submission fee. (U.S. Funds only will be accepted.) Please use our secure online checkout to submit entry fee with your uploaded entry. Unpaid submissions will be discarded before judging. After you upload your entry, you will be directed to PayPal to complete payment.

Novel:  Length is open but the novel must be unpublished. Publication rights revert to winner.Your uploaded file must include a cover sheet with your contact information. Entry fee: $30.00 per entry (U.S.$ only). Must be received by September 30, 2024 (midnight, Central Time Zone). Mailed entries should be postmarked by September 30, 2024.

Short Story: Length not to exceed 5,000 words per story.Your uploaded file must include a cover sheet with your contact information. Entry fee is $20.00 per entry (U.S.$ only). Must be received by November 30, 2024 (midnight, Central Time Zone). Mailed entries should be postmarked by November 30, 2024.

Poetry:  Length not to exceed 50 lines per entry. More than one poem may be submitted, but all poems together must not exceed the 50-line limit per entry.Your uploaded file must include a cover sheet with your contact information. Entry fee is $15.00 per entry (U.S. Funds only). Must be received by November 30, 2024 (midnight, Central Time Zone). Mailed entries should be postmarked by November 30, 2024.

*If you are unable to enter or pay online, you may mail a printed copy or a disc containing your work accompanied by your submission fee. Make checks payable to Hackney Literary Awards. Mail to 4650 Old Looney Mill Road, Birmingham, AL 35243. A $30.00 processing fee will be charged for any returned check.

Winners will be notified and announcements will be placed on the website's Winners page.
